Who We Are And What We Do

We are a group of grade nine students from Horton High School in Greenwich, Nova Scotia. This event is all run by five of us, Alicia Hugh Sam, Lindsey Atwell, Solange Morin, Ida Hudson, and Rachel MacDonald. As a part of our Service Learning Project we decided to study childhood cancer and fundraise for children's cancer research in Nova Scotia. We wanted to fundraise for a research facility in Nova Scotia that was studying treatments, early diagnosis, and cures for cancer specific to children, therefore we chose to donate to the IWK. Our fundraiser event, a bake sale, takes place on June 8 in Clock Tower Park, Wolfville. Through this bake sale we hope to raise money and awareness for childhood cancer and children's cancer research efforts. All proceeds from the bake sale will go directly to the IWK's Cancer Research Facility and we hope that the donations to this organization will continue after the fact.

What is a Service Learning Project?

A Service Learning Project is a final assessment for our CIT9 course. Our CIT9, or Citizenship class, teaches students the importance and responsibilities of being a citizen, as well as teaching us how our government works, and how to think politically. This assessment is a required part of the Nova Scotia grade nine curriculum. A Service Learning Project is an open ended project, where students must advocate for an issue in their community they feel should be addressed. They can do this in multiple different ways including raising awareness for their issue (posters, websites, classes, groups), starting a petition, fundraising for an organization or issue, or volunteering.
